What I’m reading

What type of reader are you?

I am mostly monogamous. I stick to one book at a time and love to re-read favourites. Lately though I’ve become a polygamist reader–that is, I’m reading several books at a time and never mix the plots. And just to keep it interesting I am splitting my time between audio books at night (so I don’t disturb my partner or the new puppy) and print (or e-books) during the day.

Here’s what I’ve been listening to on audio.

Marry In Scarlet

About the Book

Lady Georgiana Rutherford – irreverent and unconventional – has no plans to marry. Having grown up poor, Lady George has no intention of giving up her fortune to become dependent on the dubious and unreliable goodwill of a man. Especially a man as insufferable as the duke of Everingham, whose kisses stirs unwelcome and unsettling emotions….

My Thoughts

I’m a big fan of Ann Gracie (as you probably know if you’ve been with me for a while) and Marry In Scarlet is a fitting end to this series. Nothing new here in terms of plot, but as Regency Romances go it’s on-point and an absolute joy to read. Highly recommended.

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler
by Kelly Harms

About the Book

Overworked and underappreciated, single mom Amy Byler needs a break. So when the guilt-ridden husband who abandoned her shows up and offers to take care of their kids for the summer, she accepts his offer and escapes rural Pennsylvania for New York City where she rediscovers the woman she used to be. As the summer comes to an end, Amy must make an impossible decision: stay in this exciting new chapter of her life, or return to the life she left behind. But before she can choose, a crisis forces the two worlds together…

My Thoughts

Kelly Harms writes great characters. There is a lot in here that I can’t relate to—I have never suffered Mom guilt nor spent my days with a demanding teenage girl (at times Amy’s daughter is such a pain)—but there is so much in this book that it’s easy to relate to—especially that need to reconnect with who we were when the world seemed ripe with possibility. Great narration by Amy McFadden made this a five star read for me.

About the Book

No secret stays buried forever.

“When a torrential rainstorm uncovers a hidden corpse, small-town reporter Leah Nash is called in to cover the story.
The body is identified as Sister Mattea Riordan. A tragic accident. Except that just before she died, Sister Mattea sent Leah a cryptic message. And it had something to do with Leah’s dead sister…

My Thoughts

I’m only about one third into this but completely captivated by the main character. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. The narration is okay. After the brilliant voice acting by McFadden this narrator comes across as a little monotone, yet she suits the main character so you can’t argue with that.

A three book boxset:
Glad One, Two Crazy, Three Dumb by Margaret Lashley

Stephanie Plum meets My Name is Earl in this outrageously funny series about a snarky, jaded divorcee’s attempt at starting life over again in St. Pete Beach, Florida.

About the Book

“If you love oddball heroines and funny, hard-to-solve mysteries, the Val Fremden Mystery Series is for you. Each book in the series is packed with crazy characters, zingy dialogue and rip-roaring situational humor, making them a laugh a minute! Life is full of ups and downs. The bumps don’t seem so big when you’re laughing your butt off along the way. Val and her unexpected friends are the kind of folks who can help you do just that.”

My Thoughts

I love the tone if this series. Val is self-deprecating, selfish, and one step away from being the losers she alternately relies on and despises. Lashley likes irony and uses analogies like some people use salt, so while often funny, after reading three books in a row the analogies began to grate. But that’s okay. These are very entertaining and light which makes them great escapism.
